The challenge

The rental journey had too many moving parts.

Hiring a car is not one task. People search, book, collect the car, use it and return it. Not every station supports the same options, and Budget needed its own version of the product.

The brief was to redesign the AVIS app. I also needed to give the development team a solid base they could reuse for Budget and other group brands.

02

The approach

Map the whole rental, then build it from reusable parts.

Start with each station

I mapped what customers could do at different stations, sketched the journey on paper and turned the best routes into wireframes and prototypes.

Review the work often

Regular reviews caught new requirements early. Stakeholders could try a realistic prototype instead of interpreting a written specification.

Work alongside development

I introduced each flow in Zeplin, reviewed developer demos and adjusted the design as the React and Flutter teams built it.

Reuse the right things

Shared components kept familiar patterns consistent while leaving room for new features and different brands.

From booking to return

The same patterns follow the customer through the rental.

The system

Budget showed whether the system worked.

The AVIS components gave Budget a starting point. The interaction patterns stayed familiar, while the visual design changed to suit the second brand.

The team reused the product logic and components instead of drawing every screen again. Design and Flutter development worked from the same patterns, and the framework was ready for more group brands.

Outcome

A better rated app and less waiting at the counter.
